Our Story

Entering its 55th year of service, the General Robert E. Wood Boys & Girls Club opened its doors in 1956 and was named after the legendary General Robert Elkington Wood, who was a US Army Brigadier General and was best known for leading the Sears, Roebuck and Company from 1928 to 1954. He also founded the Allstate Insurance Company in 1931 as a subsidiary of Sears. Wood served as President of the Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago from 1949 to 1959.

Testimonials

“Whether it was being robbed and attacked on the train or riding my bike two to three miles to get to and from the Club, these obstacles have not kept me from coming to what I call my second home. When my parents separated, the staff at the Club was there for me; supporting, caring and giving me advice. Without the staff, I could have run away or handled that situation much worse. Several of the staff has been consistent role models in my life since the first step I took into the Club.”

– Vicente, General Wood Club member and the Club’s 2010 Youth of the Year.
